KESSLER/NEWMAN WEDDING DONATIONS

Dear Friends and Family of Gloria Kessler and Paul Newman,

We are so honored that Paul and Gloria have selected City Dogs Rescue to be a part of their wedding registry.

City Dogs Rescue is a 501(c)(3)-pending (tax information below) nonprofit organization run completely by volunteers in the Washington, DC area. This organization was founded when three individuals came together to help animals at high-kill shelter find loving homes in the DC area.  Since September 2011, City Dogs Rescue has rescued and adopted out over 50 urgent dogs, many with just days or hours left at the shelter.  Donations are essential to the success of City Dogs Rescue because of the costs involved in rescuing.

Many people do not realize that animal rescues must pay to "pull" a dog from a shelter, even when the dog is already on the shelter's euthanasia list.  Expenses to City Dogs Rescue include shelter fees, veterinary care, vaccinations, microchip implants (to aid in finding a lost dog), spay/neutering, and transportation fees.  While CityPaws, a veterinary hospital in DC, graciously provides City Dogs Rescue with significant discounts on vet care, City Dogs Rescue does not receive the same types of discounts when working with the vets in the areas surrounding the local shelters.  City Dogs Daycare, a separate entity, donates space for four or more dogs, and other rescues dogs are placed in foster homes throughout the DC area.

For more information about our work, please watch our video to see our 50 dogs adopted on the right. Thanks for considering donating to City Dogs Rescue in honor of the marriage of Paul and Gloria.

City Dogs Rescue has an application pending with the IRS for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

PENDING 501(c)(3) TAX-EXEMPT STATUS

City Dogs Rescue was incorporated as a DC non-profit corporation on September 21, 2011.  We currently have an application pending with the IRS for federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.   We refer to the IRS publications below on the deductibility of contributions made to City Dog Rescue during its "pending" status; however, we recommend that any questions regarding this matter be directed to your personal tax professional:

“Although donors have no assurance that contributions are tax-deductible for federal income tax purposes until the application is approved, contributions made while an application is pending would qualify if the application is approved.” Quoted from the IRS publication "Applying for 501(c)(3) Tax-Exempt Status," available here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p4220.pdf

“When the IRS approves a timely filed exemption application, exempt status is recognized back to the date the organization was created. Thus, while an application is pending, the organization can treat itself as exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3). . . . However, contributors to the organization do not have advance assurance of deductibility because the organization’s exemption is pending. If the organization ultimately qualifies for exemption for the period in which the contribution is made, the contribution will be tax-deductible by the donor.” Quoted from the IRS website section, "Contributions to Organization with IRS Application Pending." http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/article/0,,id=164254,00.html
